Former property of the week, The Wheatsheaf on High Street has now been successfully let and getting ready for a new lease of life.
The once prominent pub closed in March 2020 during the coronavirus lockdown. The lease was surrendered in September 2021 due to "the tenant at that time encountering financial difficulties," and it has remained closed for almost three years.
Now, a planning application has been submitted to East Suffolk Council by agent Malcolm Dixon, on behalf of Oulton Broad Properties Ltd (OBPL) for the "partial conversion" of the pub on the High Street in Lowestoft.
A statement on behalf of OBPL for the pub at 108 High Street, said that planning permission for this conversion is for: "ground floor and lower ground floor level to create a self-contained two-bed maisonette together with minor external alterations."
With the "whole premises vacant but undergoing extensive restoration", adding that: "The site is included in the North Lowestoft Conservation Area (NLCA).
It concludes: "This proposal will provide both useful commercial floor space and generous residential accommodation."
"It has also been demonstrated in economic terms, the existing failed pub facilities are vulnerable, and the scheme allows the opportunity to enable the pub to flourish again; and in so doing contributing towards the local economy and helping to revitalise the town centre."
Lowestoft Town Council’s planning committee recommended approval in November.
